"A
study of the banana at first may appear frivolous," writes Jenkins
(The Lawn: A History of an American Obsession). But "the use of
everyday food can offer a window into the culture of the United States."
Drawing from an unusual assemblage of evidence, Jenkins (a scholar-in-residence
at the Chesapeake Maritime Museum) argues that Americans' ideas about
the fruitAhow to store it, how to cook it, what it's good forAwere invented,
over the course of the 19th and 20th centuries, by advertisers and growers.
And their campaigns worked like a charm: before 1880, most Americans
hadn't even seen a banana; by 1910, they were consuming vast quantities
of the fruit. How did this happen? Introduced to wealthy Americans in
the second half of the 19th century as a delicacy, Jenkins argues, the
banana was quickly seized upon by businessmen who understood that they
could make a huge profit importing fruit. So they built large banana
plantations in Central America and the Caribbean; soon, they had gained
economic and political power in Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Haiti
and Mexico. Protected by American troops, U.S. corporations like United
Fruit helped set up puppet dictatorships in countries wherever they
had plantations (hence the term "banana republic"). Jenkins
capably takes readers through this history, then describes how American
businesses orchestrated popular demand for the fruitAby keeping the
price low and waging a relentless advertising campaign that promoted
the banana as delicious and healthful, either raw or cooked. Although
the book includes a wealth of trivia on banana jokes, songs and recipes,
it is really Jenkins's historical overview of the banana's production,
marketing and transporting that makes this book a strong contribution
to the growing field of food studies. 
The
Banana Wars: United States Intervention in the Caribbean, 1898-1934
offers a sweeping panorama of America's tropical empire in the age spanned
by the two Roosevelts and a detailed narrative of U.S. military intervention
in the Caribbean and Mexico. In this new edition, Professor Lester D.
Langley provides an updated introduction, placing the scholarship in
current historical context. From the perspective of the Americans involved,
the empire carved out by the banana warriors was a domain of bickering
Latin American politicians, warring tropical countries, and lawiess
societies that the American military had been dispatched to police and
tutor. Beginning with the Cuban experience. Langley examines the motives
and consequences of two military occupations and the impact of those
interventions on a professedly antimilitaristic American government
and on its colonial agents in the Caribbean, the American military.
The result of the Cuban experience, Langley argues, was reinforcement
of the view that the American people did not readlly accept prolonged
military occupation of Caribbean countries. Langley not only narrates
the history of America's tropical empire, but fleshes out the personalities
of this imperial era. The author speaks to current debates about unrest
and conflict in the Caribbean with some disturbing reminders about earlier
American experiences. 
This
work focuses on the German and French banana markets, the two largest
single importers of bananas in the EU, characterized by opposed pre-COMB
banana regimes. In addition, the US banana market, the single largest
banana importer worldwide, characterized by a free trade policy, is
also analyzed.
"In
the Shadows of State and Capital" tells the story of how Ecuadorian
peasants gained, and then lost, control of the banana industry. Providing
an ethnographic history of the emergence of subcontracting within Latin
American agriculture and of the central role played by class conflict
in this process, Steve Striffler looks at the quintessential form of
20th-century US imperialism in the region - the banana industry and,
in particular, the United Fruit Company (Chiquita). He argues that,
even within this highly stratified industry, popular struggle has contributed
greatly to processes of capitalist transformation and historical change.
The
Caribbean banana trade is a controversial issue within international
affairs. Peter Clegg investigates the complex political relationships
between the traditional actors in the trade and how the issues of colonialism
and globalization have shaped their interactions. He presents a detailed
analysis of the development of the Caribbean banana trade and analyzes
why the influence and importance of the traditional actors within the
trade has diminished since 1970.

Business" covers some of the behind the scenes maneuvering and
personality conflicts typical of early 20th century Central American
republics. It sheds light on the motivation of the men behind the UFC
and the railroads in detail not usually seen in books delaing with this
subject. Too many other books have been written about Central American
politics, especially with regard to the United Fruit Company, which
focus solely on classical political analysis. This work must be used
when studying this era in Central American history, to gain a full picture
of the events. It would be nice to see more research like that of "Doing
Business", political inclinations aside.

and Central American rogues exploit puppet regimes, revolutions, shady
capital, cheap labor, US gunships, and anything else not nailed down.
